Imagine your most beautiful friendship turned into emotionally charged moments on-screen perfectly depicting how you felt and what you went through and encapsulating your life in moments that truly matter...Wicked is just that.
As a passionate movie fan and a not-so-keen-about-musicals-person, I can hardly express how surprised I was after watching the film, Wicked Part One. Starring the incredibly talented Ariana Grande as Glinda or Galinda the Good and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, this film aims to breathe new life into the beloved Broadway show about the characters. It is more popularly known as the prequel to Wizard of Oz.
The movie was a perfect blend of enchanting storytelling and sequences that would force you to feel deeply about the characters, Wicked is set to captivate a whole new generation while addressing timeless themes that resonate deeply with audiences today.
The Magic of Adaptation
I have no idea how the stage musical was but I'm sure adapting from it came with its challenges. A balance was essential for the cast and crew to capture the show's core essence while appealing to the masses, who have digressed attention spans. I must say that both Grande and Erivo were perfectly suited for this task. Wicked does not just recount the story of the Wicked Witch; it explores the rich backstory of characters we thought we knew from Wizard of Oz (guys we haven't seen that also).
The film kept its promise to retain some of the most iconic songs, which I heard even after being far far away from the theatrical show. However, per the snippets I've seen, the original stage production and even the Wizard of Oz movie had vibrant colors and set designs. Imagine that transformed into a sweeping visual experience on screen, where every detail is brought to life. Amazing!
We don't talk about the movie here because a) I haven't watched it because of the toxic environment that it was filmed in behind the scenes and personally believe such movies should not get attention and b) I know it's a classic please don't threaten me. Thanks.
Character Depth and Connection
At its core, Wicked was about the character arcs of Galinda and Elphaba. They are more than simple archetypes; they are complex relatable individuals who don't have bad intentions necessarily. The film successfully delved into their evolving friendship and the societal pressures that shaped their lives, forcing them to play into the destinies they were meant to serve.
As the story unfolds, Elphaba emerges as a misunderstood character challenging injustice, while Galinda represents privilege and societal expectations that she wholeheartedly meets. The "good" witch only does what is expected of her until she meets Elphaba, whose one kind act changes the dynamic of their relationship.
I'd especially like to "hold space" for that scene that made me cry. It's not a spoiler don't worry but it is a scene where Galinda finally accepts Elphaba and sees her. It is absolutely heartbreaking and also something that went viral from the movie. This was the first time Galinda stepped out of her bubble and did what wasn't expected of her.
*sobs again*
Somebody, please get this scene out of my brain before I drown in my own tears.
Through their contrasting journeys, the themes of friendship, betrayal, and self-discovery are explored in depth. For example, Galinda’s initial naivety contrasts with Elphaba’s fierce determination. Their emotional struggles not only make the narrative engaging but also allows audiences to connect with their experiences on a personal level.
Music: The Heartbeat of Wicked
You can't talk about Wicked without highlighting its unforgettable score. Stephen Schwartz's compositions have become a part of global culture, loved by millions. As fans, Grande and Erivo were stepping on some big shoes and they did justice to it throughout by bringing these iconic songs to life.
Take "Defying Gravity," for example. Its soaring notes inspire listeners and encourage reflection on personal growth and liberation. Some people did not like the cuts in the song but I felt they were absolutely necessary to build up to the last part of the song.
The film adaptation did well with these melodies through stunning visual choreography too.
And wait, I feel Jonathan Bailey needs a specific mention because OMG he knows what he was doing. I have only grown to admire him more after Bridgerton Season 2.
I also feel Ariana surprised me. She was so funny and so good in this that I was in awe of her comedic timing and the way she made me love Galinda. I mean her vocals are unreal as usual. Also, Cynthia is the perfect choice, honestly. It truly showcased how much work went into these characters and the way these actors blended in seamlessly.
Cultural Relevance and Themes
The story can also be seen as a metaphor for racism some people face as Elphaba represents all of them in Wicked. In our world, where hate, stereotypes, prejudice, and challenges faced by marginalized people have only increased. The musical perfectly encapsulates how people treat others who are different than them and how we should treat everyone equally.
The immense light of female empowerment, resilience, and the importance of friendship shines throughout the musical making me wish I had a Galinda or an Elphaba in my life. Such impactful stories are bound to be celebrated and talked about.
The Remarkable Press
The cast knew what they were doing and I really appreciate them giving details about how much effort went into the movie, not just by them, but also by the whole crew. They gave people things to talk about and for whoever was following, I do not think crying was a bad thing okay?
Although sometimes it did get on my nerves after seeing my feed filled with their crying press tours. But after watching the movie, it's valid guys. Let's not give anyone a hard time for being openly expressive and being emotional. It's always a strength.
I personally hold space for them in my heart, especially after watching this magical movie. So, if you are someone who is least bothered about Wizard of Oz and hates musicals, give it a try, it's funny, heartfelt, emotional and extremely relevant even in these times. And for someone who is a fan of the Oz, you definitely should watch it.
Until next time. Toodles!!
